Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) second vice president and Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) president Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman al-Kuwari said that the 2018 Doha Diamond League is one of the most important meets of the league given that it is the first of the season and the oldest in the Middle East, with the highest champion participation.
On Friday though he’ll be looking to regroup from a sub-par indoor season –by the standards of history’s second-highest jumper, anyway– which included two victories and two runner-up finishes, the latter in Birmingham in March where he was forced to settle for world indoor silver. He’ll face Majd Eddin Ghazal of Syria, the world bronze medallist last summer, German Mateusz Przybylko, the Birmingham bronze medallist, and Ukraine’s Andriy Protsenko who has a 2.40m lifetime best from 2014.
India’s Neeraj Chopra will be in action later on Friday at the Doha Diamond League 2018. The Diamond League comes under the International Association of Athletics Federation and will see the return of the youngster after his heroics at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), he said that the 9th edition, which will be held tomorrow at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium, will be more special than the past editions as 20 global champions, Olympians and 150 athletes will be participating, led by Qatar’s high jump world champion Mutaz Barshim, the 2017 IAAF Athlete of the Year.
